Admissions through Management Quota in Colleges In Tamil Nadu

When I was seeking admissions for my son who did his schooling from a CBSE school, one thing was clear- that he would stand no chance in getting a seat into Anna University through the single window counselling for the branch he wanted in the top few colleges of Tamil Nadu.
This took me to exploring the college admissions done through management quota- and I thought I should share my knowledge to the parents who are surfing the net like I did.

These are mostly the Private colleges which are striving to out beat each other by various strategies.
I will cover the three colleges which I approached..
SSN
SVCE, Sriperambathur
RMK

SSN is very straight forward and very secretive. One needs to approach the office at Mylapore for the details. But the staff there are very co operative and answer all the questions raised, individually to each and every one. Nothing regarding admission through this quota is available on the website.
The institute admits students purely through merit in all its three categories: Sports/ NRI/ Others
The forms for the management quota is usually given after the final exams and the date of submission is after the results are announced. Students can apply under one of the above category only, meaning only one form per candidate is allowed.
After submission of the form, the call letter for counselling is intimated through post, only for the candidates selected from the lot and it is based on the merit list. However the college allots 5 marks as grace for students of CBSE. But this does not guarantee a seat in the college.
The counselling process is for a whole day at the college campus - with an online exam and a personal interview. It is done in 3 sessions for 2-3 days hence one will understand that the selection is done in a fair manner.
The results are however announced after 10 days which leaves many students enrolling in other deemed colleges where they have already paid the initial fee during the counselling and would have to pay the remaining amount which is partially refundable before the results announced.

SVCE - The process is very simple. A form has to be obtained during Jan/Feb and submitted before the said date. The information is passed telephonic ally about the date when the parent has to meet the management, this usually falls during the board exams, so we can keep the whole process a hush hush from our children. The slot for the meeting is based on the branch one is seeking for and the marks the student obtained during the 10th exams. The rest is like a usual management seat quota where one is told about the amount to be made through cheque to a given organisation, etc..
The amount varies from branch to branch and its a no installment no deduction basis. Once the payment is done in full the seat is confirmed irrespective of the marks obtained by the student in the boards , only a pass certificate is needed.

RMK - Though I did not personally approach this institution, the process was similar with the payment of the amount to seek admission. Both these colleges wanted the payment to be made before the announcement of the results which put many parents in a fix. One is not given the option to back out even if the child fairs good in other entrance test, and there is no refund of the money once paid... and the amount is nothing small.

Hope it was of some use...

Happy admission seeking...
I stood confused and muddled up last year..
Now its your turn..

  1. Madam,
First of all thank you for sharing your experiences with the admission for colleges...
I am a cbse student, passing out this year. I have applied for ECE through management quota at SVCE. After payment of the prescribed capitation fees, and obtaining the seat, will they check my class 12 marks and look for specific cut off or as you said, just pass certificate is enough????

    1. If they have specified a cutoff they will expect it. Mark sheets will be checked. Every college has 35% seats as management seats, the unfilled seats will be surrendered before the TNEA single window counselling. So visit them after u recieve ur marks. Last year just clearing the board was enough. I m sure U would have done well. Good luck. Heard the results are expected on 26 May.

    2. Yes madam, I have done all the subjects well except maths, as this year's paper was completely a new pattern and we faced many surprises.....
Let me ask you one question madam, if at all I get the marks well above what they require in physics and chemistry, and if maths mark get low, will they terminate my application even after I pay their cap. Fess???

  2. The criteria is based on ur PCM score with minimum cutoff so it should not be a problem ... Don't keep thinking about it, go out and relax.. These last few days are filled with anxiety let it not stress u out. All will turn out well ...

  3. They will not terminate ur admn , if u score less marks u may need to make more visits to the office ...

    1. Madam, If I had approached the colleges like RMK and svce during the months of jan-feb , how much would have they asked for management quota?

    2. Would not matter as you have already paid rite... It's always human nature that u could have saved something when looking back. Everyone does what is rite at that moment and that's what u have done. Think u must just wait for ur results... And not fret about what's over.
Just relax .... U seem to be overly tensed...

This was exactly what I was looking for... Someone with whom I can get suggestions and get to know about these experiences of getting admission in to a college.

Once again, Its very grateful of you to take pain and write all your thoughts about education and share it via this blog.

I will let you know once I finish all my admission processes.

    1. I got my results, madam. With gods grace everything turned out well at the end.
But as I feared I got only 75% in maths and 90, 92 in chemistry and physics respectively and I have also got my seat at venkateshwara.

I once again thank you, madam, for responding to my queries

  5. Let me make a small contribution to this blog by sharing my experience with RMK college this year.

Those who try to meet the office, a general advice is PLEASE DO NOT WEAR ANY JEANS, T-SHIRT. ONLY FORMAL IS ALLOWED THERE, EVEN WHILE SEEKING ADMISSION.
They also collect your mobile phones at the entry and give you a token.

You are then taken into a office just at the right side of the entrance. I went there at 8.30 am. We were first asked to eat breakfast from their canteen, instead of giving us token. After having the breakfast, we were given a token. I gave my 10th mark sheet, as I did not get my 12th result yet.

After 10 mins, the first six tokens were asked to climb up inside a mini van, and they took us to place far behind in the campus, and we stopped at a building. Inside it, we have to pass through metal detectors and scanner. Before meeting the person, we are thoroughly checked. To say in short, be prepared to face a security more tighter than that in airports!

Inside, I was asked my 10th mark sheet(be sure to carry atleast two of them) and the person enquirer me about the marks I am expecting to get in the +2 exam. He said that only those students who are above 75% are eligible for admission through management quota. They then specified the amounts for each of RMK, RMD and RMK technology, with RMK being the highest amt.

He finally said that he would wait for my results to come, and that there will be certain seats reserved For cbse students. He also stated that the amount could be bargained, if my cutoff came higher..

So that's how admission through management quota goes in RMK.

    1. I am so sorry for responding so late. Hope its not too late. You need to check the office and they usually give the details discreetly ... If you are good in sports you should try SSN and CEG too.. though both are purely merit based. work hard and good luck.

    1. The aptitude test is to test the basic English and engg skills. And you can be certain that it is purely based on merit ...

  10. Man i will surely get above 1100 but my cut off will not satisfy top colleges ....i want to get into some top colleges by management quota..wat to do mam..below marks are my guess and surely i will get more than this.
    French..190 above
    English..180 Above
    Physics..195 above
    Chemistry..192 above
    Maths..160-180(can't predictable)
    Computer....195 above
    Least total....1112
    Least cutoff...176.75
    Max cutoff....183.75(math mark as 172)
my max maths mark can be 180

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. my sincere advise will be ... if ur maths marks are not good enough you must think of other options other than engg.. the syllabus and difficulty level is pretty tough in university level and be aware you have maths till 3rd year with 6 semesters.. most of the students seem to be having an arrear in maths which gets annoying even more. French and english marks are not considered for admn in professional colleges. so think it over and keep all your options open.

    1. I'm just a parent of an engineering student.. You need to wait and see how the selection goes. In fact SSN office will indicate the cutoff when submitting the form after the marks arrive.. It's inly around 30% of the seats which go for management quota and they have a general, NRI and sports quota.
So you need to be in top 10% of the students who have applied to be confident about the branch of ur choice.
      All the best ...

Hats off to SSNCE. Very fair and transparent admissions.

  16. Mam,

My son had taken ISC board exams this year & the results are expected by 3rd week of May'14. I'm looking for admission in SSN, SRM - which is better? & also what would be cut-off mark to get into this collges. We are from Bangalore. Your input would help us to paln better in the coming days

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It depends on ur choice ultimately. However since SRM will finish admn much earlier u can take the admn and wait till Ssn admn so not to loose out if ur not getting into SSN .. SRM has a procedure for refunding of fees paid at the time of counselling.

  17. Ma'am, I am expecting a cut off of around 185 or so. Can I get civil at SSN through management quota? I do not know whether moderation is done this year in CBSE corrections. So ma'am , do you think I will be able to get into SSN?
    Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Moderation for CBSE is usually +5.. It depends a lot of probabilities , just go thro the process and choose options.

      Delete
    2. So , ma'am , are you like , moderation is mandatory every year for CBSE Students? Ma'am , I am talking about the CBSE Board corrections, and not the +5 they give at SSN Through management quota.

      Delete
    3. Ma'am , the moderation , I meant in my comment is the moderation the CBSE Boards do in the correction and not the moderation which SSN Gives us. So , I'd like to ask , you whether do you have any idea of moderation in CBSE Board Correction?
      Thanks in advance.

      Delete
    4. Moderation at CBSE is not transparent. Let's say even if 1 student gets centum in CBSE then it's cancelled. So don't depend on it.

  18. Hello mam,
I'm a CBSE student (MBC CATEGORY). I'm applying for ssn under the MQ. How should I prepare for their entrance test? Is it purely an aptitude test ? Moreover, I have also played for TAMIL NADU WOMEN'S CRICKET TEAM for 3 years. will they consider my achievements in sports ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ssn has 3 forms usually and u are allowed to apply under only one( this was the procedure in 2012) ie: sports/general/NRI . So if ur filling the sports quota then u can't fill under general. So it's better to ask the office for advice. After all all colleges want good students

    2. Thank you so much for your reply mam. Now, I have got my results. My cut off is189 (CBSE). Will ssn give +5 for CBSE students under MQ this year too mam? And I also belong to mbc category, is the cut off for getting admission less for mbc under the MQ? Thanks for your kind help mam!

    3. Do check with the office about the marks for CBSE. They even ans over phone calls. And when applying for MQ the quota for OBC or MBC does not apply in any college.

  23. Mahalakshmi : Mam my cut off is 196 (TNSB). I've received the call letter from ssn, mam. They have called me for counselling on 13 of june. But mam I have no idea of what they are going to ask in the entrance neither the interview. If I am selected should I have to pay the fees immediately. Will there be sufficient time for me to pay (first week of july) or will I have to pay it before the anna university counselling begins? 24. The test is aptitude which they must have mentioned in the counselling letter the interview will be to test ur English communication skill.
Results will be announced after 10 days to a week. At times it may be earlier than the TNAU counselling.

  25. i am sharing the experience of my (aptitude test + interview ) for ssn ..
ppl above 195 cut off in tn state board and 190.5 in cbse and 198 in andhra board were called for the test..
there were about 100 to 150 students per batch and there were 5 batches per day.. the test was held on june 12 and june 13.. we were divided into groups of 25 students and taken to a computer lab where we wrote the test..
it had 25 questions .. +4 for correct responses and -1 for incorrect ones.. the time limit was 40 mins.. about 15 questions were straight forward and we could easily answer it but rest of the ones took time to solve and were nt that easy.. anyway after completing the test the scores were displayed on the screen .. i had scored 92/100... my cut off was 195.50.. since the average score is about 60 yo 75 i was relieved to see the score on the screen.. and there was an interview.. ppl one advice pls present your co curricular certificates to the interviewers ..that too has got weightage.. but may sure that u include mostly class 11 and 12 certificates.. especially regional and national participation ones..
and though it s mainly to test your English proficiency they too can ask questions from the newspapers current affairs.. so read last 10 days newspapers properly.. and it lasts for about 5 mins ... thats it.. they call after a week and thank god i got the desired branch in ssn.. so cut off is given weightage but friends you can compensate for that by scoring very high in the test..
Only those friends of mine who scored above 80 got the desired branch.. others above 65 too got but not their desired branch.. so prepare well for the test and try to concrete your seat by scoring above 90..
P.S: sorry for such a long post.. i had searched internet for info about ssn entrance but could not find a helpful one so thought of sharing my own experience .. hope it would be helpful for my juniors and all the best.. lets meet at ssn.. :)

Please let me know which college is the best?SRM or SVCE in terms of education, further studies, placement etc
I want to apply thru management?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Both are not the best.. However since I presume u need to pay for both before the results u have to choose either of one.
Srm is a deemed univ and the fee structure is increasing yr after yr. the no of students admitted too are much higher than svce. So obviously there is more competition during placement.
My advice would be to speak with the current seniors of the respective colleges to get a better idea and clear your doubts.
